She is in supreme physical shape since she adores hiking and trailblazing. She is pretty in a girl-next-door way, nothing spectacular, and she tends to dress casual and rugged, in jeans, boots, and t-shirts. She loves wearing t-shirts with funny or pithy sayings. Personality: As a ranger for the Park Service, Hope has amassed a reputation for being able to traverse rough areas and locate missing people. Sometimes those people are dead male hikers, unfortunately, and sometimes she was the one who offed them, but at least she can provide some closure for their families. Although this sounds macabre, Hope is a very pleasant, friendly woman with a deep need for adventure. She has a good laugh, a quick and sly smile, and an open ear for everyone. Tough but fair, she expects a lot from people, holds them to high standards, and is ruled by a desire for balance and evenness in the world. Her mother's family is Greek, and Hope holds a pallanistic faith, believing in karma and timely death. That she is often the instrument for that death is just part of her accepted burden from her gods. She would change it if she could, because it is a sad duty, but she does not feel overt guilt or shame for it either. Sexuality: Heterosexual History: Hope Thessy was born in Michigan, and grew up among the wilds of the woods. Her mother Leona had come from Greek immigrants, and took the whole story of the Sirens living on their islands seriously. She kept to the area around the Great Lakes, usually spending her days on the small, uninhabited islands with her tiny daughter in tow. Hope grew up knowing full well what she was, and was taught from that early age the heavy responsibility it was. Her mother believed that those men who sought out her distant drifting songs were seeking death, and she was honor-bound to comply. Very few men did come to the islands, following either the faint songs or just looking to satisfy their curiousity about a legend or two, so Hope could see where her mother's explanation made sense. She was raised believing in honor, mercy, and the importance of their history. However, Hope was barely a teen herself when a hunter came to the island, correctly deducing that the legends pointed to a siren living out in the waters. He'd come prepared and was able to resist Leona's song long enough to shoot her dead. His only mistake was lowering his defenses once the woman was dead, because it made him suddenly vulnerable to Hope's grief-stricken attack. Although the young siren was capable of carrying out the deed and killing the man, she stopped herself when he fell unconcious. Her mother had taught her to never kill out of rage or anger, only luring those who desired death to drown in the lake depths. Despite the fact that the hunter had destroyed her mother, young Hope could tell he did not want to die himself. It was in the desperation in his eyes as he looked into hers. In the end, she couldn't go against all her life's teachings. Leaving the man trussed and alone on the island, she wrapped and weighted her mother's body, leaving it to the cold lake water before she rowed to the mainland, never to look back. The skills she'd learned growing up meant she did fine living off the land, and she found herself a place in a halfway home for runaway teens so that she could go to school. Leona had laid out exact details of what Hope should do in the circumstances of her mother's death, since Leona was fully aware of the problem hunters presented. She'd left money and important papers in a lockbox for Hope, like the girl's birth certificate so that Hope could live a normal life with little trouble. Hope went back to high school, graduating near the top of her class, keeping her mother's tradition by only preying upon those who actively sought death-defying actions, like hiking far into the woods purposefully unprepared, for the adventure. Each of those victims felt the thrill to the very end, which was how she was taught to use her ability. However, Hope has never physically killed a man with her own hands. True to the traditions her mother imparted, she lured all her victims either to drown, to fall from heights, or into the path of a dangerous wild animal. She feels that this happens because it is their time, as per their gods. If it was not their time to die, they would be immune to her songs or else not come into her territory. Knowing she always needed to remain close to nature, and understanding her skill set, Hope worked towards and finally obtained a job as a park ranger, traversing acres of forest around Ann Arbor to keep it mapped and maintained. She takes her job very seriously, from keeping tabs on the birth rate of brown bears to pursuing illegal hunters and invasive species release. She eventually bought herself a trailer so that she didn't have to deal with roommates, and settled into the trailer park in Scarlet Oaks. She is quite happy hiking out into the woods most days, but has come to appreciate the human element as well in her adopted town, something her mother never enjoyed. Hope likes spending time with her friends in town, and oftentimes makes a special effort to go out with them in the evenings. Hope also values learning. She had rudimentary teaching from her mother, enough to get her through elementary and middle school work, but high school truly opened her eyes to what was out there. She cannot afford college even part time, but Hope has been taking one course at a time since she moved to Ann Arbor, and has come close to finishing a degree in botany. She has a good working knowledge of plant biology and animal physiology. A side effect of being more social than her mother ever had is that Hope has become a bit of a romantic. She knows that a serious relationship would be tricky for her, but she feels it can be done with the right person. However, she doesn't like the idea of abandoning any son she has, despite her mother's assurances it was necessary. To that end, Hope has an intrauterine implant to prevent pregnancy. She knows that she would rather not have to make such a decision about her children. Since the Light of May: Hope is rather trepidatious of the Light of May, realizing that it would do her no good, only encourage more hunters to seek out her kind. In all her years she's never met another siren, so she doesn't know how rare or commonplace they are. However, she suspects that they are pretty scarce. She's not bothered by this; she likes people and the fewer killed, the better. She herself has meditated so deeply on her faith and the implications of her nature that she kills only four times a year at most. She assumes that all sirens are the same, a blindness that will likely be overturned when she actually meets one. Her opinions on weres are different; she is fascinated by their nature, and was glad to have knowledge of them, because it resolved some questions she had about tracks she’d found in the woods. One other aspect of the LoM is that Hope has become curious about a study being done at the university. Although she's not sure yet how right it is, she has decided to subject herself to Adrienne's effort to cure the siren bloodlust. She has only revealed what she is to Adrienne herself, however. The possibility of being cured of it makes her uneasy, but she thinks that perhaps it is necessary...in case other sirens out there start abusing their power. Special Skills/Abilities: Personal Weaknesses: Murderlust: Obviously, despite her rigorous control of this, it is a big drawback for Hope. Through her faith, she has a strong sense of rightness with the world over the results of her killing, but the authorities wouldn't likely see it that way. Nor would any hunters. Thrill-seeker: Hope loves her job because of the dangerous situations it can get her into, but she is much higher at risk for being involved in a terrible accident. Immortality doesn't mean she can't be seriously injured or killed. Not to mention the underlying psychological makeup that makes her interested in these things. Naive: Because she is so scrupulous about her kills and about her life in general, Hope cannot believe she would be a target for a hunter. Ann Arbor is far enough away from the busier metropolis cities like New York that she has a hard time comprehending hunters would be in her midst. If she were to face one, she wouldn't have the real sense to be afraid. Poor: All the money Hope has in the world comes from her ranger job, and it barely covers the payments on her trailer and the rent for her spot, in addition to her bills. She has very little savings, and if anything happened to her trailer, she’d be basically destitute. However, she lives as tightly as possible and was able to save up enough for a downpayment on a car. Personal Strengths: Tracker: For as long as she can recall, Hope has been as one with the woods. Not only can she track all manner of animal, she has innate direction sense and can hide herself in the woods with little trouble. She transforms into a warbler when she has to cover great distances or needs to be away from the scene of a death. She does not tend to fly much, since she dislikes transforming. Physical prowess: Hope has always kept herself in peak condition. She spends her days hiking, and works out on her days off. She enjoys rough sports like rock climbing and cliff diving. Botanical knowledge: Because she’s been taking courses for so many years, Hope has amassed a good working knowledge of the plant and animal life that surrounds Ann Arbor, including sometimes being able to tell shifter tracks.
